War in the Neighborhood: Ministry of Foreign Affairs officer discusses Iraq-Armenia-US relations



In the past two years Armenia-Iraq relations have been strengthened as Armenia opened an embassy in Baghdad. In 2001, Minister of Foreign Affairs Vartan Oskanian met with Saddam Hussein to discuss cooperation between the countries. Since, members of Parliament have made trips to discuss business deals, including acquiring oil from Iraq.

Charged: Vazgen Sargsyan's brother under arrest in death of Tigran Naghdalyan


On March 15 Armen Sargsyan brother of assassinated Prime Minister Vazgen Sargsyan was arrested and charged with organizing the December murder of Tigran Naghdalyan, head of Public TV of Armenia. Sargsyan is the ninth to be arrested since the Presidential runoff March 5. (Another Sargsyan brother, Aram, was a candidate in the preliminary round of elections before throwing his support to Opposition runoff candidate Stepan Demirchyan.)

According to www.sport-express.ru, the Armenian Football Federation (AFF) received an official letter from Northern Irish Football Federation saying that the national football team of Northern Ireland would not visit Armenia if war broke out in Iraq.

Minor Protest

Members of "Mister and Miss Armenia", an organization that produces children's pageants and contests held a beauty protest outside the United States Embassy in Yerevan Thursday. The kids recently were in Iraq, and wanted to demonstrate their feelings to the US presence here.
