This has been a momentous week for the future of the
Caucasus. The long anticipated transfer of power in
Azerbaijan began to take effect with the ailing grey
fox Heidar Aliev apparently on his deathbed, first in
Turkey and now in the United States, and his son Ilham
confirmed as Prime Minister and heir-in-waiting.
The hot air of August is made thicker by a city being
reconstructed. Passersby on any street in the center
of Yerevan move as if playing some game: One step, then
another, then a leap across a ditch or a hole or a stack
of blocks, to land covered in dust.
For decades, the Cascade complex has been a Yerevan
landmark, with its 800 or so white stone steps reaching
from the city center up the long hill to Victory Park.

As Gohar Hambardzumyan talks, the cracked skin of her
hands catches the attention and provides evidence of
the harshness of her work. Sun beams make perfect ornaments
of the wrinkles that line her face and the bright blush
of her cheeks can not distract from the tiredness in
her 38-year-old eyes.
FC Pyunic lost its chances for entering the third qualifying
round of the UEFA Champions League competition after
it suffered a 1-0 from Bulgaria's CSKA Sofia in the
second leg match of the second qualifying round played
on Wednesday August 6 in Sofia at Balgarska Armia stadium.
