Arts Digest : A capsule review and preview of art and entertainment in Armenia .



Award Week Last Saturday President Robert Kocharyan gave prizes to some artists and scientists. The award of President of Republic was founded by the "Robert Poghosyan and sons" fund. The prizes are given to representatives of art and science annually in appreciation of their work last year.

In the art field violinist Nikolay Madoyan was awarded for excellent performing art and architect Alexander Badalyan for designing the central part of Spitak.

The tradition continued this week as well. October 1 people representing different fields of activity were honored by Kocharyan with highest award of the republic.

Actress Mariam Ghazaryan from Paronyan Theatre, Sergey Maghalyan from Stanislavsky Russian Theatre, Elina Aghamyan from Dramatic Theatre of Vanadzor, Poghos Suqiasyan from Gymri Dramatic Theatre, artistic director of Armenian Jazz Band Armen Martirosyan, diasporan poet Petros Poghosyan were awarded with "Movses Khorenatsi" medal.

Actor Rafayel Kotangyan, singer Suzann Margaryan, actor Armen Marutyan, soloist of the National Opera and Ballet Theatre Hasmik Hatsagortsyan, Painter Aram Isabekyan, Film director Harutyun Khachatryan and Ervand Manaryan, the Artistic director of "Agulis" puppet theatre, were given the title of "Honored Artist".

Painters Varuzhan Vardanyan and Arkadi Baghdasaryan (Arko) where awarded with the title of "Armenian Honoured Painter".


Awards spiced with brandy. Seven-day "ArmMono" Theatre Festival ended October 1 at the Yerevan Brandy Factory, which was the main sponsor of the festival. During the closing ceremony 6 participants where awarded with various prizes. The head of jury Valeri Khazanov mentioned that all performances where exciting, but no one was worth a Grand Prix.

Vardan Petrosyan with his "In a blaze" show was awarded for versatile talent. Beatre Ehlerci from Germany was honored with original prize "Award for civic achievement", Aram Hovhannisyan's "Rosinant" performance was appreciated for its original interpretation. Lithuanian Birute Mari was awarded for keeping the feature completeness of drama. Young artist Nare Haykazyan was recognized for showing modern esthetic and Greta Mejlumyan was regarded as the most professional artist.



Adventurous way
Despite carious difficulties Russian Circus arrived to Armenia October 2. The circus was to be here September 26, but according to the director of the Russian Circus the way to Armenia turned out to be full of adventures.

"The Russians didn't give exit certificate for bears and Georgians didn't allow the actors to cross the border," he said.

The Russian Circus will present performances named "The wheel of death", which means that the shows will go without harnesses.

Pop. A Pop Concert with the participation of winners of New Wave Russian singers festival will take place October 5. Vadim Azarkh from Russia, Nelly from Moldova, Leon from Sweden and Russian pop group Radiocafe will perform at Demirchyan Center. Young Armenian singer Emmy, who took part in New Wave festival two months ago, will also participate at the concert. Ticket prices vary from 300 up to 3000 drams (50 cents up to $5).
