Some 200 residents of the village of Fantan,
about 40 kilometers north of Yerevan have
become ill from a disease transmitted by
drinking water. Six are in serious condition
and are being treated in infectious hospitals
in Yerevan and Charentsavan.
To the music of Armenian traditional instruments,
70-year old Boris Ghahramyan raised a young
seedling in his hands and new life began
in the Lori Mountains to the sound of the
zurna and dhol on May 2.

Yesterday (May 8) the sixth international
jewelry exhibition "Goldsmith-2003"
was opened in the State Conference Hall,
with President Robert Kocharyan on hand
to cut a ribbon to open the four-day event.
On a hill overlooking Yerevan, "Mother
Armenia" statue stands to symbolize
peace through strength. Under her cautious
gaze thousands passed today to commemorate
Armenia's war dead.
May 9 is Victory Day, when Armenia remembers its war veterans
with ceremonies that include laying carnations and standing
in formation near the Eternal Flame above Yerevan.
