Trial of Two Centuries Closes Quietly: No surprises in October 27 verdict


The "October 27" trial has ended nearly three years after it began, and more than four years since the killings in parliament for which seven defendants have been tried.

And it has ended with no surprise for a case in which the accused were shown on international television killing eight members of government and wounding ??

Brothers Nairy and Karen Hunanyan, their uncle Vram Galstyan, Edward Grigoryan, Derenik Bejanyan and Ashot Kniazyan were sentenced to life in prison. Hamlet Stepanyan was sentenced to 14 years in prison.

Costly Cuts: Forests disappear, firewood prices increase as wood-burning season arrives


Mountains surrounding Vanadzor are scalped. Trunks of felled trees and young transplants show that once there used to be a forest here. Residents of Vanadzor themselves regret that the forest was cut down. But they also frankly make excuses.

"When your child shivers with cold and begs for warmness with frozen look in the eyes you have to do something. You take an axe and go straight to the forest," says 50 year old taxi driver Samvel Galstyan.

Celebrating Themselves: Day of Disabled marked in Yerevan


Wednesday (December 3) in Yerevan's Hayordots (Sons of Armenia) House of Malatia-Sebastia community the International Day of Disabled was marked. Thirty five disabled children participating in the event presented different communities of the capital.

Many of their friends would cheer them and greet them with applause from the hall, but still it took a lot of courage to get on the stage.

About 100 hardliners marched in Yerevan last Saturday to mark the 83 year anniversary of Armenia becoming a communist country. Many oldtimers wish it were, still.
