Five tennis players of Armenian heritage representing different countries of the world are participating at one of the four most prestigious tournaments in the world of tennis Grand Slam Roland Garros taking place in Paris, France from May 24 to June 6. After two rounds of the seven-round competition only two remained.

Eighth seed Argentinean David Nalbandian beat Colombian Alejandro Falla 5-7, 6-0, 6-2, 6-0 in the second round and will face Stefan Koubek from Austria. In the first round Nalbandian beat rising French star Richard Gasquet 6-4, 7-5, 7 7-6 1.

Magdalena Maleeva (seeded 21) of Bulgaria scored a second-round victory over Marta Marrero of Spain (7-5, 6 3-7 7, 7-5) and will face Meghann Shaughnessy of the US. Maleeva reached the second round by beating Anca Barner of Germany 6-2, 6-2.

America’s Andre Agassi (seeded 6) was among first-round casualties, losing to Jerome Haehnel of France (4-6, 6 4-7 7, 3-6).

Armenia’s Sargis Sargsyan was also put out in the first round, by Mario Ancic of Croatia (6 4-7 7, 6-4, 4-6, 4-6).

Marie-Gayane Mikaelian representing Switzerland lost 5-7, 6 5-7 7 in the first round to Russian Maria Kirilenko.

The Armenian contingent is represented in doubles where Sargsyan teamed up with Karsten Braasch from Germany for a first-round victory (6-3, 6-0) over Travis Parrott (USA) and Thomas Shimada ( Japan).

In the second round of men's doubles Sargsyan and Braasch will struggle against Jared Palmer (USA) and Pavel Vizner ( Czech Republic) seeded 12.

Maleeva and teammate Sonya Jeyaseelan of Canada lost in the first round, 1-6/retired agains Ansley Cargill of USA and Nana Miyagi from Japan.
