Sports: Football (Champions League)

Champions of Armenian Football Premier League FC Pyunik secured first leg away victory over FK Pobeda beating Macedonian champions 3 -1 on July 13 in Gradski, Skopje.

The victory brings the Armenian club closer to entering the second qualifying round of the 2004-2005 UEFA Champions League, the most prestigious football club competition in Europe.

Pyunik took a step closer to second-round action.

All three Pyunik goals were scored in the first half. Also in the first half Pyunic lost one player when Karen Alexanyan was red-carded a minute after Pyunik scored its third goal.

Edgar Manucharyan of Pyunik scored twice (15 th and 41 st minutes) and assisted to Zhora Hovhannisyan in the third goal (26 th minute).

Macedonian failed to capitalize on its one-man advantage, scoring its only goal in minute 20 on a 16-meter strike from Blogaja Gesoski.

The second leg match takes place July 21 in Yerevan’s Republican Stadium. Pyunik needs a win, a draw or even a loss of two goals or less to enter the second qualifying round.

If Pyunik reaches the second round they will face a strong side from Ukraine, FC Shakhtior.
