The World Chess Championships in Tripoli, Libya has finished and FIDE (Federation Internationale des Echecs) released rankings for July 2004.
According to ranking there are five Armenian men chess players among the best 100 in the chess world. Last year there were four.
The best Armenian chess player is still Grand Master
Vladimir Hakobyan, who holds 17th place (last year he
was 14 th) in the rankings with 2,692 points (comparing
with the first place taken by Garry Kasparov from Russia
having 2,817 ranking points).
Second best Armenian chess player in the world is again Grand Master Levon Aronyan. He improved his result and moved from 44th place he was holding last year to 32 nd with 2,671 points.
Then come another two Armenian Grand Masters Rafayel Vahanyan and Smbat Lputyan. Both have also improved their results comparing with last year when they held 71st and 72nd places in the world with 2,623 points. Today Vahanyan is 53 rd with 2642 points and Lputyan is 60 th with 2634 points.
Gabriel Sargsyan is the fifth Armenian chess player, who entered FIDE list of the best 100 chess players this year. He holds 88 th position with 2617 points.
Armenian women chess players have only one player in the top 50 FIDE women chess players.
Elina Danielyan with 2,430 points holds 31 st place in the FIDE rankings.
