Free Style Wrestling (European Championships)
Gold winner Berberyan

Five Armenian wrestlers were participating at the Senior Free Style Wrestling European Championships taking place in Ankara, Turkey from April 23 to 25.

Martin Berberyan from Yerevan won gold medal in the 55 kg. weight category by winning victory over Russian wrestler Vadim Batayev.

Zhirayr Hovhanesyan took fourth place in 66 kg. Three other Armenians failed to place.

Football (Friendly match)

 On April 28 the Armenian national football team met in Yerevan with the team of another former Soviet Republic, Turkmenistan, in a friendly match. It was the first meeting of the two country teams.

The Armenians dominated the match, but were not on the scoreboard until minute 67 when Ara Hakobyan netted the only goal.

Hakobyan from FC Banants is among current top five goal-scorers in the ESM Golden Shoe rankings. During last year’s season of the Armenian Premier League he scored 45 goals.

Weightlifting (European Championships)

On April 26 the 83rd Men’s and 17th Women’s European Weightlifting Championships concluded in Kiev, Ukraine.

The Armenian team left without a medal.

Twenty year-old Artur Danielyan was 11 th in his category managing 300 kg. in total (130 kg. in the snatch and 170 kg. in the clean and jerk). Armen Ghazaryan, 22, took 14 th place in the same division.

Another two Armenian weightlifters were competing with other 23 athletes in the 77 kg category. 23-year-old Gevorg Alexanyan took 8th place managing 340 kg. in total (155 kg. in the snatch and 185 kg. in the clean and jerk) and 27-year-old Arsen Melikyan took 10th place with the total result 337.5 kg. (155 kg. in the snatch and 182.5 kg. in the clean and jerk).

Tigran Martirosyan, 21, was 10th among 28 athletes in 85kg. category showing 360 kg total result (162.5 kg. in the snatch and 197.5 kg. in the clean and jerk).

And finally in +105kg category Armenia was represented by two weightlifters 27-year-old Sos Khachatryan, who took 10 th place with total result 375 kg (175 kg. in the snatch and 200 in the clean and jerk) and Ashot Danielyan. However, Danielyan didn't hold any place in this category as he could only show result in Snatch (190kg) and failed to show any result in Clean and Jerk.

Armenia ’s sole entry in the women’s competition, 17-year-old Hripsime Kheurshudyan, who took 6th place in 63 kg. weight category.

Armenian Men's team took 22nd place among 34 European countries.

Tennis (ATP Tour)

 David Nalbandian of Argentina has advanced to the third round of the Open Seat Godo International Series Gold tournament taking place in Barcelona, Spain.

Nalbandian, ranked 27 and seeded third, in the clay-court tournament defeated Martin Todd of the US 6-2, 6-4 and will face Spain’s Marc Lopez in the quarterfinals.

Meanwhile Sargis Sargsyan (ATP 73) from Armenia finished his participation at the BMW Open by Credit Suisse International Series tournament in Munich, Germany from April 26 to May 2 suffering a second round 2-6, 4-6 defeat from Michel Kratochvil of Switzerland (unranked).

Playing on the clay surface in the first round Sargsyan (unseeded) won in a hard match 6-4, 7-6 (6) victory over James Blake from USA (current ATP ranking is 24).

At the competition Sargsyan earned €6150 and collected 3 race points.
