Sports: Weightlifting (European Championships)


Together with about 130 weightlifters from 32 European countries seven Armenian athletes are competing at the 83rd Men’s and 17th Women’s European Weightlifting Championships taking place in Kiev, Ukraine through April 26.

Armenia is represented in the women’s division by 17-year-old Hripsime Kheurshudyan, who finished her participation at the tournament in 63 kg. weight category. Competing with 14 other athletes in the category she took sixth place with the total result of 200 kilograms (90 kg. in the snatch and 110 kg. in the clean and jerk).

First place in this division was taken by Bulgarian weightlifter Gergana Kirilova with total result 227.5 kilograms.

For the present moment Kheurshudyan holds 34 th place in the world rankings for 63 kilogram division out of 131 weightlifters.

The Armenian men’s team is represented by six weightlifters. Two of them have already finished tournament in the 69 kg. category.

Twenty year-old Artur Danielyan (42 nd place in the rankings) was 11 th in the category managing 300 kg. in total (130 kg. in the snatch and 170 kg. in the clean and jerk). Armen Ghazaryan, 22, took 14 th place in the same division.

Ekrem Celil from Turkey won the gold medal in the category with a total result of 337.5 kilograms.

The four remaining Armenians have not finished their competitions.
