Sports Digest: Armenian Women Top in Chess



Chess (European Team Championships)

The Armenian women's chess team has won the European Team Championship held in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, October 11-20.

Three Armenian women performed with no losses collecting 14 points of 18 possible.

Grandmaster Elina Danielyan collected 8 points of 9, showing the best result of both men and women competitors.
Grandmaster Lilit Mkrtchyan collected 5.5 points of 8 and international master (second to grandmaster) Nelly Aghinyan played one draw in one match collecting 0.5 points for the team.

In the final round the Armenians managed to beat a strong Polish team to capture the title.

 


Tennis

Sargis Sargsyan is successfully performing at St. Petersburg Open International Series Tournament taking place in St. Petersburg, Russia through Sunday.

Playing on the indoor carpet, the Yerevan native reached the quarterfinals after easily beating Radek Stepanek of the Czech Republic 6-3, 6-2 and Igor Andreev of Russia by the same score.

Sargsyan was to meet German Lars Burgsmuller in quarterfinal action today.

Meanwhile David Nalbandian is taking part at another International Series Tournament, the Davidoff Swiss Indoors taking place in Basel, Switzerland, also finishing this weekend.

Like Sargsyan, Nalbandian (seeded 4) playing on indoor carpet surface reached quarterfinals.

In first round the Argentinean of Armenian heritage beat Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo from Spain, 6-4, 6-0. In second round he won 4-1, (walk over) over French tennis player Arnaud Clont.

In quarterfinals Nalbandian will meet with strong UK player Tim Henman.

In 2002 Nalbandian won the Davidoff Swiss Indoors and claimed his second title of last year.

 


Football ("Ararat-73")

Friendly match between veterans of legendary football squad "Ararat-73" that won both tournament and cup of the USSR in 1973 and representatives of USSR team of those years took place today (Friday) at Hrazdan stadium.

The match was dedicated to the 30th anniversary of the famous double victory of the Armenian club.

Prominent football players from Armenia such as Arkady Andreasyan, Alyosha Abrahamyan, Eduard Markarov and others and former USSR footballers are in Yerevan for the match.

Surviving members of the legendary Ararat football team were reunited Friday October 24 for a match to mark the 30th anniversary of their Soviet league
championship and cup double-winning season in 1973. The team played an all-star former Soviet national side at Yerevan's Hrazdan stadium.
