Sports: FIFA Chief in town to inaugurate renovated stadium

Joseph Sepp Blatter received a traditional greeting to begin his two-day visit.

President of FIFA (Federation Internationale de Football Association) Joseph Sepp Blatter came to Yerevan yesterday for a two day visit and to attend the reopening of Malatia Stadium.

The stadium has undergone a $400,000 renovation sponsored by FIFA's "Goal" program.

Blatter's visit was also to include meetings with President Robert Kocharyan and Prime Minister Andranik Margaryan.

Table Tennis (World Championships)

Armenian table tennis players joined players from 117 countries in Paris, France at the 47th Individuals World Table Tennis Championships taking place from May 19 to May 25.

Mesrop Ghukasyan ranked 855, Murad Asatryan ranked 854, David Sargsyan ranked 612 and Anna Poghosyan ranked 196 (women's category) are representing Armenia.

Poghosyan was the only Armenian to pass the first round of singles competition, defeating Anastasiya Koutsova from Ukraine ranked 376 and Bodovoahangy Ramanambitana from Madagascar ranked 639.

In the second bracket, Poghosyan lost to Li Jia Wei of Singapore.

In Men's Doubles Sargsyan and Ghukasyan suffered a first-round loss to Manh Cuong Vu and Nam Hai Nguyen of Vietnam

In Mixed Doubles, Poghosyan and Sargsyan were put out by Ryusuke Sakamoto and Sayaka Hirano of Japan.

Greco-Roman Wrestling (European Championships)

The 50th European Greco-Roman Senior Wrestling Championships began today in Belgrade, Serbia and Montenegro.

Six Armenians are among 144 wrestlers from 30 European countries wrestling for the prizes in seven weight categories.
