Wrestler
Aram Margaryan has been named Sportsman of the
Year by Armenian sports reporters.
Margaryan, from Yerevan, was given the honor
mainly for his performance in the 36th Senior
World Free Style Wrestling Championship, September
in Tehran.
Margaryan, who wrestles in the 60-kilogram weight
division, came away from the championship with
a Silver medal. But Turkish wrestler Harun Dogan,
who defeated Margaryan, was subsequently disqualified
when tests found a banned substance in Dogan's
system. The Gold then went to Margaryan.
Two chess players took second and third places
in the polls for the best Armenian sportsman:
Vladimir Hakobyan (ranked 20th in FIDE) and Smbat
Lputyan (ranked 56th in FIDE), both from Yerevan.
Both players contributed to Armenia's third-place
finish in the 35th Chess Olympiad last month in
Bled, Slovenia.
Fourth place in the voting went to chess player
Lilit Mkrtchyan, who competed for the Armenian
women's team in Bled and is ranked No. 40 in the
world.
