Memories in Music: A taste of Armenia from the sounds of its musicians

The musical choices are almost limitless. Perhaps our recommendations will help.

Want to take a slice of Armenia home from your vacation? Music is a good way to do it. Music is a rich part of Armenian culture, and tapes and CDs pack easily and are inexpensive in Armenia. Visitors can take full advantage of a wide musical selection with low prices in shops along the streets in the center.

Rabiz musicians account for the largest assortment and variety of Armenian music, with Armenia pop singers coming in at second place. Hayko, Nuneh Yesayan, Shushan Pertrosyan, Grisha Aghakhanyan, Ara Gevorgyan and Aida Sargsyan are some of the favorite Armenian pop singers.

Folk music is also a popular seller. Flora Martirosyan and Ruben Martirosyan are the standard-bearers in this genre, but new singers are also populating the charts. Armenian dance music and collections of duduk music, such as "Just Spice of Duduk" are also popular. Duduk artist Jivan Gasparyan is Armenian's most popular duduk player, and has recorded the most albums.

You cannot avoid finding music shops in Yerevan and the CDs are almost exclusively pirated copies, selling for about $3 each. But most local music is sold at higher prices on authentic discs.
